Και μή μεθύσκεσθε οίνω\, εν ώ εστίν ασωτία\, αλλά πληρούσθε εν πνεύματι\, λαλούντες εαυτοίς ψαλμοίς και ύμνοις και ᾠδαίς πνευματικαίς\, ᾄδοντες και ψάλλοντες εν τη καρδία υμών τω κυρίω.\nΑνάγνωσις Ευαγγελίου: Κατά Ματθαίον 18:10-20\nΕίπεν ο Κύριος· ῾Οράτε μή καταφρονήσητε ενός των μικρών τούτων· λέγω γαρ υμίν ότι οι άγγελοι αυτών εν ουρανοίς διά παντός βλέπουσι το πρόσωπον του πατρός μου του εν ουρανοίς. ήλθε γαρ ο υιός του ανθρώπου σώσαι το απολωλός. Τί υμίν δοκεί; εάν γένηταί τινι ανθρώπω εκατόν πρόβατα και πλανηθή έν εξ αυτών\, ουχί αφείς τα ενενήκοντα εννέα επί τα όρη\, πορευθείς ζητεί το πλανώμενον; καί εάν γένηται ευρείν αυτό\, αμήν λέγω υμίν ότι χαίρει επ᾿ αυτώ μάλλον ή επί τοις ενενήκοντα εννέα τοις μή πεπλανημένοις. ούτως ουκ έστι θέλημα έμπροσθεν του πατρός υμών του εν ουρανοίς ίνα απόληται εις των μικρών τούτων.\n᾿Εάν δε αμαρτήση εις σέ ο αδελφός σου\, ύπαγε και έλεγξον αυτόν μεταξύ σού και αυτού μόνου· εάν σου ακούση\, εκέρδησας τον αδελφόν σου· εάν δε μή ακούση\, παράλαβε μετά σού έτι ένα ή δύο\, ίνα επί στόματος δύο μαρτύρων ή τριών σταθή πάν ρήμα. εάν δε παρακούση αυτών\, ειπέ τη εκκλησία· εάν δε και της εκκλησίας παρακούση\, έστω σοι ώσπερ ο εθνικός και ο τελώνης. ᾿Αμήν λέγω υμίν\, όσα εάν δήσητε επί της γής\, έσται δεδεμένα εν τω ουρανώ\, και όσα εάν λύσητε επί της γής\, έσται λελυμένα εν τω ουρανώ. They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts\, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them on that day when\, according to my gospel\, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus. But if you call yourself a Jew and rely upon the law and boast of your relation to God and know his will and approve what is excellent\, because you are instructed in the law\, and if you are sure that you are a guide to the blind\, a light to those who are in darkness\, a corrector of the foolish\, a teacher of children\, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth – you then who teach others\, will you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing\, do you steal? You who say that one must not commit adultery\, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols\, do you rob temples? You who boast in the law\, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? He is a Jew who is one inwardly\, and real circumcision is a matter of the heart\, spiritual and not literal. His praise is not from men but from God. Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? Much in every way. To begin with\, the Jews are entrusted with the oracles of God. What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? By no means! Let God be true though every man be false\, as it is written\, “That thou mayest be justified in thy words\, and prevail when thou art judged.” But if our wickedness serves to show the justice of God\, what shall we say? That God is unjust to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.) By no means! For then how could God judge the world? But if through my falsehood God’s truthfulness abounds to his glory\, why am I still being condemned as a sinner? And why not do evil that good may come? – as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just. What then? Are we Jews any better off? No\, not at all; for we have already charged that all men\, both Jews and Greeks\, are under the power of sin\, as it is written:\n“None is righteous\, no\, not one; no one understands\, no one seeks for God. And to one who does not work but trusts him who justifies the ungodly\, his faith is reckoned as righteousness. So also David pronounces a blessing upon the man to whom God reckons righteousness apart from works: “Blessed are those whose iniquities are forgiven\, and whose sins are covered; blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not reckon his sin.” Is this blessing pronounced only upon the circumcised\, or also upon the uncircumcised? We say that faith was reckoned to Abraham as righteousness. How then was it reckoned to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after\, but before he was circumcised. He received circumcision as a sign or seal of the righteousness which he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns\, or figs from thistles? So\, every sound tree bears good fruit\, but the bad tree bears evil fruit. A sound tree cannot bear evil fruit\, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will know them by their fruits. Not every one who says to me\, ‘Lord\, Lord\,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven\, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”
