SUMMARY:7th Sunday of Matthew
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 07/27/2025\nSaints and Feasts: 7th Sunday of Matthew; Panteleimon the Great Martyr & Healer; Nicholas of Novgorod the fool-for-Christ; Anthousa the Righteous Confessor; 853 Martyrs of Thrace who were drowned; Manuel the Righteous\nMatins Gospel Reading: John 20:1-10\nOn the first day of the week\, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early\, while it was still dark\, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran\, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple\, the one whom Jesus loved\, and said to them\, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb\, and we do not know where they have laid Him.” Peter then came out with the other disciple\, and they went toward the tomb. They both ran\, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first; and stooping to look in\, he saw the linen cloths lying there\, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came\, following him\, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying and the napkin\, which had been on His head\, not lying with the linen cloths\, but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple\, who reached the tomb first\, also went in\, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not know the scripture\, that He must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes.\nEpistle Reading: II Timothy 2:1-10\nTimothy\, my son\, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus\, and what you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier on service gets entangled in civilian pursuits\, since his aim is to satisfy the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hardworking farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say\, for the Lord will grant you understanding in everything.\nRemember Jesus Christ\, risen from the dead\, descended from David\, as preached in my gospel\, the gospel for which I am suffering and wearing fetters like a criminal. But the word of God is not fettered. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect\, that they also may obtain salvation in Christ Jesus with its eternal glory.\nGospel Reading: Matthew 9:27-35\nAt that time\, as Jesus passed by\, two blind men followed him\, crying aloud\, “Have mercy on us\, Son of David.” When he entered the house\, the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to them\, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him\, “Yes\, Lord.” Then he touched their eyes\, saying\, “According to your faith be it done to you.” And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly charged them\, “See that no one knows it.” But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.\nAs they were going away\, behold\, a dumb demoniac was brought to him. And when the demon had been cast out\, the dumb man spoke; and the crowds marveled\, saying\, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.” But the Pharisees said\, “He casts out demons by the prince of demons.”\nAnd Jesus went about all the cities and villages\, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom\, and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.

SUMMARY:Paraskeve the Righteous Martyr of Rome
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 07/26/2025\nSaints and Feasts: Paraskeve the Righteous Martyr of Rome; The Holy Hieromartyrs Hermolaus\, Hermippus\, and Hermocrates; Prisca the Righteous Martyr; Moses the Hungarian; Jacob Netsvetov the Enlightener of Alaska\nEpistle Reading: Galatians 3:23-29;4:1-5\nBrethren\, before faith came\, we were confined under the law\, kept under restraint until faith should be revealed. So that the law was our custodian until Christ came\, that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come\, we are no longer under a custodian; for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God\, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek\, there is neither slave nor free\, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s\, then you are Abraham’s offspring\, heirs according to promise. I mean that the heir\, as long as he is a child\, is no better than a slave\, though he is the owner of all the estate; but he is under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. So with us; when we were children\, we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe. But when the time had fully come\, God sent forth his Son\, born of a woman\, born under the law\, to redeem those who were under the law\, so that we might receive adoption as sons.\nGospel Reading: Mark 5:24-34\nAt that time\, a great crowd followed Jesus and thronged about him. And there was a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years\, and who had suffered much under many physicians\, and had spent all that she had\, and was no better but rather grew worse. She had heard the reports about Jesus\, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. For she said\, “If I touch even his garments\, I shall be made well.” And immediately the hemorrhage ceased; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. And Jesus\, perceiving in himself that power had gone forth from him\, immediately turned about in the crowd\, and said\, “Who touched my garments?” And his disciples said to him\, “You see the crowd pressing around you\, and yet you say\, ‘Who touched me?'” And he looked around to see who had done it. But the woman\, knowing what had been done to her\, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him\, and told him the whole truth. And he said to her\, “Daughter\, your faith has made you well; go in peace\, and be healed of your disease.”

SUMMARY:Dormition of St. Anna\, mother of the Theotokos
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 07/25/2025\nSaints and Feasts: Dormition of St. Anna\, mother of the Theotokos; Olympias the Deaconess; Eupraxia & Julia the Righteous of Tabenna; Gregory Kallidis\, Metropolitan of Heraclea; Memory of the Fifth Ecumenical Council in Constantinople (553)\nFast Day (Wine and Oil Allowed)\nEpistle Reading: Galatians 4:22-27\nBrethren\, Abraham had two sons\, one by a slave and one by a free woman. But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh\, the son of the free woman through promise. Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai\, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem\, for she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem above is free\, and she is our mother. For it is written\, “Rejoice\, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and shout\, you who are not in travail; for the children of the desolate one are many more than the children of her that is married.”\nGospel Reading: Luke 8:16-21\nThe Lord said\, “No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a vessel\, or puts it under a bed\, but puts it on a stand\, that those who enter may see the light. For nothing is hid that shall not be made manifest\, nor anything secret that shall not be known and come to light. Take heed then how you hear; for to him who has will more be given\, and from him who has not\, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.”\nThen his mother and his brothers came to him\, but they could not reach him for the crowd. And he was told\, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside\, desiring to see you.” But he said to them\, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”

SUMMARY:Christina the Great Martyr of Tyre
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 07/24/2025\nSaints and Feasts: Christina the Great Martyr of Tyre; Athenagorus the Apologist; Boris and Gleb\, the Passion-bearers; Kapiton\, Himenaos and Hermogenes\, the Martyrs; Theophilos the New Martyr of Zakynthos\nEpistle Reading: I Corinthians 7:24-35\nBrethren\, in whatever state each was called\, there let him remain with God. Now concerning the virgins\, I have no command of the Lord\, but I give my opinion as one who by the Lord’s mercy is trustworthy. I think that in view of the present distress it is well for a person to remain as he is. Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be free. Are you free from a wife? Do not seek marriage. But if you marry\, you do not sin\, and if a virgin marries she does not sin. Yet those who marry will have worldly troubles\, and I would spare you that. I mean\, brethren\, the appointed time has grown very short; from now on\, let those who have wives live as though they had none\, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning\, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing\, and those who buy as though they had no goods\, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the form of this world is passing away. I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the affairs of the Lord\, how to please the Lord; but the married man is anxious about worldly affairs\, how to please his wife\, and his interests are divided. And the unmarried woman or girl is anxious about the affairs of the Lord\, how to be holy in body and spirit; but the married woman is anxious about worldly affairs\, how to please her husband. I say this for your own benefit\, not to lay any restraint upon you\, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord.\nGospel Reading: Matthew 15:12-21\nAt that time\, the disciples came to Jesus and said to him\, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?” He answered\, “Every plant which my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up. Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if a blind man leads a blind man\, both will fall into a pit.” But Peter said to him\, “Explain the parable to us.” And he said\, “Are you also still without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach\, and so passes on? But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart\, and this defiles a man. For out of the heart come evil thoughts\, murder\, adultery\, fornication\, theft\, false witness\, slander. These are what defile a man; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.” And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon.

SUMMARY:Phocas the Holy Martyr\, Bishop of Sinope
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 07/23/2025\nSaints and Feasts: Phocas the Holy Martyr\, Bishop of Sinope; Ezekiel the Prophet; Pelagia the Righteous of Tinos; Trophimos & Theophilios and the 13 others martyred in Lycia; St. Anna of Levkadio; The Icons of the Most Holy Theotokos of Pochaev; Icon of the Mother of God\nStrict Fast\nEpistle Reading: I Corinthians 7:12-24\nBrethren\, if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever\, and she consents to live with him\, he should not divorce her. If any woman has a husband who is an unbeliever\, and he consents to live with her\, she should not divorce him. For the unbelieving husband is consecrated through his wife\, and the unbelieving wife is consecrated through her husband. Otherwise\, your children would be unclean\, but as it is they are holy. But if the unbelieving partner desires to separate\, let it be so; in such a case the brother or sister is not bound. For God has called us to peace. Wife\, how do you know whether you will save your husband? Husband\, how do you know whether you will save your wife? Only\, let every one lead the life which the Lord has assigned to him\, and in which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches. Was any one at the time of his call already circumcised? Let him not seek to remove the marks of circumcision. Was any one at the time of his call uncircumcised? Let him not seek circumcision. For neither circumcision counts for anything nor uncircumcision\, but keeping the commandments of God. Every one should remain in the state in which he was called. Were you a slave when called? Never mind. But if you can gain your freedom\, avail yourself of the opportunity. \nFor he who was called in the Lord as a slave is a freedman of the Lord. Likewise he who was free when called is a slave of Christ. You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men. So\, brethren\, in whatever state each was called\, there let him remain with God.\nGospel Reading: Matthew 14:35-36;15:1-11\nAt that time\, when the men of Gennesaret recognized Jesus\, they sent round to all that region and brought to him all that were sick\, and besought him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment; and as many as touched it were made well.\nThen Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said\, “Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” He answered them\, “And why do you transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God commanded\, ‘Honor your father and your mother\,’ and\, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother\, let him surely die.’ But you say\, ‘If any one tells his father or his mother\, What you would have gained from me is given to God\, he need not honor his father.’ So\, for the sake of your tradition\, you have made void the word of God. You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you\, when he said: ‘This people honors me with their lips\, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me\, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’ ” And he called the people to him and said to them\, “Hear and understand: not what goes into the mouth defiles a man\, but what comes out of the mouth\, this defiles a man.”

SUMMARY:Mary Magdalene\, the Holy Myrrh-bearer and Equal to the Apostles
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 07/22/2025\nSaints and Feasts: Mary Magdalene\, the Holy Myrrh-bearer and Equal to the Apostles; Markella\, the Virgin-martyr of Chios\nEpistle Reading: I Corinthians 9:2-12\nBrethren\, you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. This is my defense to those who would examine me. Do we not have the right to our food and drink? Do we not have the right to be accompanied by a wife\, as the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living? Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Who tends a flock without getting some of the milk? Do I say this on human authority? Does not the law say the same? For it is written in the law of Moses\, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain.” Is it for oxen that God is concerned? Does he not speak entirely for our sake? It was written for our sake\, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of a share in the crop. If we have sown spiritual good among you\, is it too much if we reap your material benefits? If others share this rightful claim upon you\, do not we still more? Nevertheless\, we have not made use of this right\, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ.\nGospel Reading: Luke 8:1-3\nAt that time Jesus went on through cities and villages\, preaching and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him\, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary\, called Magdalene\, from whom seven demons had gone out\, and Joanna\, the wife of Chuza\, Herod’s steward\, and Susanna\, and many others\, who provided for him out of their means.

SUMMARY:John and Symeon the Fool for Christ
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 07/21/2025\nSaints and Feasts: John and Symeon the Fool for Christ; Parthenios\, Bishop of Arta\nEpistle Reading: I Corinthians 5:9-13;6:1-11\nBrethren\, I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with immoral men; not at all meaning the immoral of this world\, or the greedy and robbers\, or idolaters\, since then you would need to go out of the world. But rather I wrote to you not to associate with any one who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of immorality or greed\, or is an idolater\, reviler\, drunkard\, or robber – not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. “Drive out the wicked person from among you.” When one of you has a grievance against a brother\, does he dare go to law before the unrighteous instead of the saints? Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you\, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more\, matters pertaining to this life! If then you have such cases\, why do you lay them before those who are least esteemed by the church? I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no man among you wise enough to decide between members of the brotherhood\, but brother goes to law against brother and that before unbelievers? To have lawsuits at all with one another is defeat for you. Why not rather suffer wrong? Why not rather be defrauded? But you yourselves wrong and defraud\, and that even your own brethren. Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the immoral\, nor idolators\, nor adulterers\, nor sexual perverts\, nor thieves\, nor the greedy\, nor drunkards\, nor revilers\, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed\, you were sanctified\, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.\nGospel Reading: Matthew 13:54-58\nAt that time\, Jesus came to his own country\, and taught the people in their synagogue so that they were astonished\, and said\, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works? Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all this?” And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them\, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.” And he did not do many mighty works there\, because of their unbelief.

SUMMARY:6th Sunday of Matthew
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 07/20/2025\nSaints and Feasts: 6th Sunday of Matthew; The Glorious Prophet Elias (Elijah); Synaxis of the Russians who were perfected in France: Protopresbyter Alexios Mednedkov\, Presbyter Dimitrii Klepinin\, Mother Maria Skobtsova\, her son Yuri Skobtsov\, and Ilia Fondaminskii; Mother Maria Skobtsova\, New-Martyr of France\nMatins Gospel Reading: Luke 24:36-53\nAt that time\, having risen from the dead\, Jesus went up and stood among His disciples and said to them\, “Peace be with you.” But they were startled and frightened\, and supposed that they saw a spirit. And He said to them\, “Why are you troubled\, and why do questionings rise in your hearts? See My hands and My feet\, that it is I Myself; handle Me\, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have.” And when He had said this\, He showed them His hands and His feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy\, and wondered\, He said to them\, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave Him a piece of broiled fish \, and He took it and ate before them. Then He said to them\, “These are My words which I spoke to you\, while I was still with you\, that everything written about Me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled.” Then He opened their minds to understand the scriptures\, and said to them\, “Thus it is written\, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead\, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in His name in all nations\, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold\, I send the promise of My Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” Then He led them out as far as Bethany\, and lifting up His hands\, He blessed them. While He blessed them\, He parted from them\, and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped Him\, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy\, and were continually in the Temple blessing God.\nEpistle Reading: James 5:10-20\nBRETHREN\, take as an example of suffering and patience the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Behold\, we call those happy who were steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job\, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord\, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful. But above all\, my brethren\, do not swear\, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath\, but let your yes be yes and your no be no\, that you may not fall under condemnation. Is any one among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church\, and let them pray over him\, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man\, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins\, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another\, and pray for one another\, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects. Elijah was a man of like nature with ourselves and he prayed fervently that it might not rain\, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again and the heaven gave rain\, and the earth brought forth its fruit. My brethren\, if any one among you wanders from the truth and some one brings him back\, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.Gospel Reading: Matthew 9:1-8\nAt that time\, getting into a boat Jesus crossed over and came to his own city. And behold\, they brought to him a paralytic\, lying on his bed; and when Jesus saw their faith he said to the paralytic\, “Take heart\, my son; your sins are forgiven.” And behold\, some of the scribes said to themselves\, “This man is blaspheming.” But Jesus\, knowing their thoughts\, said\, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier\, to say ‘Your sins are forgiven\,’ or to say ‘Rise and walk?’ But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins” he then said to the paralytic — “Rise\, take up your bed and go home.” And he rose and went home. When the crowds saw it\, they were afraid\, and they glorified God\, who had given such authority to men.

SUMMARY:Macrina the Righteous\, sister of St. Basil
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 07/19/2025\nSaints and Feasts: Macrina the Righteous\, sister of St. Basil; Dius\, Abbot of Antioch; Saint Theodore\, Bishop of Edessa; Translation of the Holy Relics of Righteous Seraphim of Sarov\nEpistle Reading: Romans 9:1-5\nBrethren\, I am speaking the truth in Christ\, I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit\, that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brethren\, my kinsmen by race. They are Israelites\, and to them belong the patriarchs\, and of their race\, according to the flesh\, is the Christ\, who is God over all\, blessed for ever. Amen.\nGospel Reading: Matthew 9:18-26\nAt that time\, a ruler came in and knelt before Jesus\, saying\, “My daughter has just died; but come and lay your hand on her\, and she will live.” And Jesus rose and followed him\, with his disciples. And behold\, a woman who had suffered from a hemorrhage for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment; for she said to herself\, “If I only touch his garment\, I shall be made well.” Jesus turned\, and seeing her he said\, “Take heart\, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well. And when Jesus came to the ruler’s house\, and saw the flute players\, and the crowd making a tumult\, he said\, “Depart; for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. But when the crowd had been put outside\, he went in and took her by the hand\, and the girl arose. And the report of this went through all that district.

Ταύτα δέ\, αδελφοί\, μετεσχημάτισα εις εμαυτόν και Απολλώ διʼ υμάς\, ίνα εν ημίν μάθητε το μή υπέρ ό γέγραπται φρονείν\, ίνα μή εις υπέρ του ενός φυσιούσθε κατά του ετέρου. Τις γαρ σε διακρίνει; Τί δε έχεις ό ουκ έλαβες; Ει δε και έλαβες\, τί καυχάσαι ως μή λαβών; Ήδη κεκορεσμένοι εστέ\, ήδη επλουτήσατε\, χωρίς ημών εβασιλεύσατε· και όφελόν γε εβασιλεύσατε\, ίνα και ημείς υμίν συμβασιλεύσωμεν.\nΑνάγνωσις Ευαγγελίου: Κατά Ματθαίον 13:44-54\nΕίπεν ο Κύριος την παραβολήν ταύτην· ῾Ομοία εστίν η βασιλεία των ουρανών θησαυρώ κεκρυμμένω εν τω αγρώ\, όν ευρών άνθρωπος έκρυψε\, και από της χαράς αυτού υπάγει και πάντα όσα έχει πωλεί και αγοράζει τον αγρόν εκείνον. Πάλιν ομοία εστίν η βασιλεία των ουρανών ανθρώπω εμπόρω ζητούντι καλούς μαργαρίτας· ός ευρών ένα πολύτιμον μαργαρίτην απελθών πέπρακε πάντα όσα είχε και ηγόρασεν αυτόν. Πάλιν ομοία εστίν η βασιλεία των ουρανών σαγήνη βληθείση εις την θάλασσαν και εκ παντός γένους συναγαγούση· ήν\, ότε επληρώθη\, αναβιβάσαντες αυτήν επί τον αιγιαλόν και καθίσαντες συνέλεξαν τα καλά εις αγγεία\, τα δε σαπρά έξω έβαλον. ούτως έσται εν τη συντελεία του αιώνος. εξελεύσονται οι άγγελοι και αφοριούσι τους πονηρούς εκ μέσου των δικαίων\, και βαλούσιν αυτούς εις την κάμινον του πυρός· εκεί έσται ο κλαυθμός και ο βρυγμός των οδόντων. Λέγει αυτοίς ο ᾿Ιησούς· συνήκατε ταύτα πάντα; λέγουσιν αυτώ\, ναί\, Κύριε. ο δε είπεν αυτοίς· διά τούτο πάς γραμματεύς μαθητευθείς εις την βασιλείαν των ουρανών όμοιός εστιν ανθρώπω οικοδεσπότη\, όστις εκβάλλει εκ του θησαυρού αυτού καινά και παλαιά. Και εγένετο ότε ετέλεσεν ο ᾿Ιησούς τάς παραβολάς ταύτας μετήρεν εκείθεν\, και ελθών εις την πατρίδα αυτού εδίδασκεν αυτούς εν τη συναγωγή αυτών\, ώστε εκπλήττεσθαι αυτούς και λέγειν· πόθεν τούτω η σοφία αύτη και αι δυνάμεις;

SUMMARY:Holy Martyr Emilian
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 07/18/2025\nSaints and Feasts: Holy Martyr Emilian; Holy Martyrs Paul\, Thea and Valentine; Stephen\, Archbishop of Constantinople; Our Holy Father John\, Archbishop of Constantinople; Holy New Martyrs Elizabeth the Grand Duchess and the Novice Barbara; Theneva of Glasgow\nStrict Fast\nEpistle Reading: I Corinthians 4:5-8\nBrethren\, do not pronounce judgment before the time\, before the Lord comes\, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then every man will receive his commendation from God. I have applied all this to myself and Apollos for your benefit\, brethren\, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written\, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another. For who sees anything different in you? What have you that you did not receive? If then you received it\, why do you boast as if it were not a gift? Already you are filled! Already you have become rich! Without us you have become kings! And would that you did reign\, so that we might share the rule with you!\nGospel Reading: Matthew 13:44-54\nThe Lord said this parable\, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field\, which a man found and covered up; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.\n Again\, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls\, who\, on finding one pearl of great value\, went and sold all that he had and bought it.\n Again\, the kingdom of heaven is like a net which was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind; when it was full\, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into vessels but threw away the bad. So it will be at the close of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous\, and throw them into the furnace of fire; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.\n Have you understood all this?” They said to him\, “Yes.” And he said to them\, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.” And when Jesus had finished these parables\, he went away from there\, and coming to his own country he taught them in their synagogue.
