Εγένετο ούν παροξυσμός\, ώστε αποχωρισθήναι αυτούς απʼ αλλήλων\, τον τε Βαρνάβαν παραλαβόντα τον Μάρκον εκπλεύσαι εις Κύπρον· Παύλος δε επιλεξάμενος Σίλαν εξήλθεν\, παραδοθείς τη χάριτι του θεού υπό των αδελφών. We must not put Christ to the test\, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. Now these things happened to them as a warning\, but they were written down for our instruction\, upon whom the end of the ages has come. Therefore let any one who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.\nGospel Reading: Matthew 16:6-12\nThe Lord said to his disciples\, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” And they discussed it among themselves\, saying\, “We brought no bread.” But Jesus\, aware of this\, said\, “O men of little faith\, why do you discuss among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? But now that faith has come\, we are no longer under a custodian; for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God\, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek\, there is neither slave nor free\, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh\, the son of the free woman through promise. Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai\, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem\, for she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem above is free\, and she is our mother. This is my defense to those who would examine me. Do we not have the right to our food and drink? Do we not have the right to be accompanied by a wife\, as the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living? Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Who tends a flock without getting some of the milk? Do I say this on human authority? Does not the law say the same? For it is written in the law of Moses\, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain.” Is it for oxen that God is concerned? Does he not speak entirely for our sake? It was written for our sake\, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of a share in the crop. If we have sown spiritual good among you\, is it too much if we reap your material benefits? If others share this rightful claim upon you\, do not we still more? Nevertheless\, we have not made use of this right\, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ.\nGospel Reading: Luke 8:1-3\nAt that time Jesus went on through cities and villages\, preaching and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him\, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary\, called Magdalene\, from whom seven demons had gone out\, and Joanna\, the wife of Chuza\, Herod’s steward\, and Susanna\, and many others\, who provided for him out of their means.

But rather I wrote to you not to associate with any one who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of immorality or greed\, or is an idolater\, reviler\, drunkard\, or robber – not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. “Drive out the wicked person from among you.” When one of you has a grievance against a brother\, does he dare go to law before the unrighteous instead of the saints? Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you\, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more\, matters pertaining to this life! If then you have such cases\, why do you lay them before those who are least esteemed by the church? I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no man among you wise enough to decide between members of the brotherhood\, but brother goes to law against brother and that before unbelievers? To have lawsuits at all with one another is defeat for you. Why not rather suffer wrong? Why not rather be defrauded? But you yourselves wrong and defraud\, and that even your own brethren. Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the immoral\, nor idolators\, nor adulterers\, nor sexual perverts\, nor thieves\, nor the greedy\, nor drunkards\, nor revilers\, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed\, you were sanctified\, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.\nGospel Reading: Matthew 13:54-58\nAt that time\, Jesus came to his own country\, and taught the people in their synagogue so that they were astonished\, and said\, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works? Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all this?” And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them\, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.” And he did not do many mighty works there\, because of their unbelief.
