DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 06/18/2025\nSaints and Feasts: Leontius\, Hypatius\, & Theodulus the Martyrs of Syria; Leontios the Myrrh-Streamer of Argos; Aitherios the Martyr of Nicomedia\nStrict Fast\nEpistle Reading: Romans 4:13-25\nBrethren\, the promise to Abraham and his descendants\, that they should inherit the world\, did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs\, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath\, but where there is no law there is no transgression. That is why it depends on faith\, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants — not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham\, for he is the father of us all\, as it is written\, “I have made you the father of many nations” — in the presence of the God in whom he believed\, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. In hope he believed against hope\, that he should become the father of many nations; as he had been told\, “So shall your descendants be.” He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body\, which was as good as dead because he was about a hundred years old\, or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God\, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God\, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. That is why his faith was “reckoned to him as righteousness.” But the words\, “it was reckoned to him\,” were written not for his sake alone\, but for ours also. It will be reckoned to us who believe in him that raised from the dead Jesus our Lord\, who was put to death for our trespasses and raised for our justification.\nGospel Reading: Matthew 7:21-23\nThe Lord said\, “Not every one who says to me\, ‘Lord\, Lord\,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven\, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me\, ‘Lord\, Lord\, did we not prophesy in your name\, and cast out demons in your name\, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them\, ‘I never knew you; depart from me\, you evildoers.'”

Beloved\, being very eager to write to you of our common salvation\, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. For admission has been secretly gained by some who long ago were designated for this condemnation\, ungodly persons who pervert the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny the only Master and our Lord Jesus Christ. Now I desire to remind you\, though you were once for all fully informed\, that the Lord saved a people out of the land of Egypt\, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels that did not keep their own position but left their proper dwelling have been kept by him in eternal chains in the nether gloom until the judgment of the great day; just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities\, which likewise acted immorally and indulged in unnatural lust\, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire. Yet in like manner these men in their dreamings defile the flesh\, reject authority\, and revile the glorious ones. But when the archangel Michael\, contending with the devil\, disputed about the body of Moses\, he did not presume to pronounce a reviling judgment upon him\, but said\, “The Lord rebuke you.” But these men revile whatever they do not understand\, and by those things that they know by instinct as irrational animals\, they are destroyed. Woe to the ungodly\, for they walk in the way of Cain\, and abandon themselves for the sake of gain to Balaam’s error\, and perish in Korah’s rebellion. These are blemishes on your love feasts\, as they boldly carouse together\, looking after themselves; waterless clouds\, carried along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn\, twice dead\, uprooted; wild waves of the sea\, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars for whom the nether gloom of darkness has been reserved for ever. It was of these also that Enoch in the seventh generation from Adam prophesied\, saying\, “Behold\, the Lord came with his holy myriads\, to execute judgment on all\, and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness which they have committed in such an ungodly way\, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” These are grumblers\, malcontents\, following their own passions\, loud-mouthed boasters\, flattering people to gain advantage. But you must remember\, beloved\, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; they said to you\, “in the last time there will be scoffers\, following their own ungodly passions.” It is these who set up divisions\, worldly people\, devoid of the Spirit. But you\, beloved\, build yourselves up on your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit; keep yourselves in the love of God; wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And convince some\, who doubt; save some\, by snatching them out of the fire; on some have mercy with fear\, hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. Now to him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you without blemish before the presence of his glory with rejoicing\, to the only God\, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord\, be glory\, majesty\, dominion\, and authority\, before all time and now and for ever. Ούτοί     εισι γογγυσταί\,  μεμψίμοιροι\,  κατά τάς   επιθυμίας   αυτών πορευόμενοι\,  και το   στόμα αυτών   λαλεί υπέρογκα\,  θαυμάζοντες   πρόσωπα   ωφελείας   χάριν.     Υμείς     δέ\, αγαπητοί\,  μνήσθητε   των ρημάτων   των προειρημένων   υπό των   αποστόλων   του Κυρίου   ημών Ιησού   Χριστού\,   ότι   έλεγον   υμίν ότι   εν εσχάτω   χρόνω έσονται   εμπαίκται   κατά τάς   εαυτών   επιθυμίας   πορευόμενοι   των ασεβειών.     Ούτοί     εισιν οι   αποδιορίζοντες\,  ψυχικοί\,   Πνεύμα μή   έχοντες. Do you not know that the law is binding on a person only during his life? Thus a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he lives; but if her husband dies she is discharged from the law concerning the husband. Accordingly\, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies she is free from that law\, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.\nLikewise\, my brethren\, you have died to the law through the body of Christ\, so that you may belong to another\, to him who has been raised from the dead in order that we may bear fruit for God. While we were living in the flesh\, our sinful passions\, aroused by the law\, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. And her neighbors and kinsfolk heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her\, and they rejoiced with her. And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they would have named him Zacharias after his father\, but his mother said\, “Not so; he shall be called John.” And they said to her\, “None of your kindred is called by this name.” And they made signs to his father\, inquiring what he would have him called. Εγένετο δε εν τω ιερατεύειν αυτόν εν τη τάξει της εφημερίας αυτού έναντι του Θεού\, κατά το έθος της ιερατείας έλαχε του θυμιάσαι εισελθών εις τον ναόν του Κυρίου· και πάν το πλήθος ήν του λαού προσευχόμενον έξω τη ώρα του θυμιάματος. ώφθη δε αυτώ άγγελος Κυρίου εστώς εκ δεξιών του θυσιαστηρίου του θυμιάματος. και εταράχθη Ζαχαρίας ιδών\, και φόβος επέπεσεν επ’ αυτόν. είπε δε πρός αυτόν ο άγγελος· μή φοβού\, Ζαχαρία· διότι εισηκούσθη η δέησίς σου\, και η γυνή σου Ελισάβετ γεννήσει υιόν σοι\, και καλέσεις το όνομα αυτού Ιωάννην· και έσται χαρά σοι και αγαλλίασις\, και πολλοί επί τη γεννήσει αυτού χαρήσονται. έσται γαρ μέγας ενώπιον του Κυρίου\, και οίνον και σίκερα ου μή πίη και Πνεύματος Αγίου πλησθήσεται έτι εκ κοιλίας μητρός αυτού\, και πολλούς των υιών Ισραήλ επιστρέψει επί Κύριον τον Θεόν αυτών· και αυτός προελεύσεται ενώπιον αυτού εν πνεύματι και δυνάμει Ηλιού\, επιστρέψαι καρδίας πατέρων επί τέκνα και απειθείς εν φρονήσει δικαίων\, ετοιμάσαι Κυρίω λαόν κατεσκευασμένον. και είπε Ζαχαρίας πρός τον άγγελον· κατά τί γνώσομαι τούτο; εγώ γάρ ειμι πρεσβύτης και η γυνή μου προβεβηκυία εν ταις ημέραις αυτής. και αποκριθείς ο άγγελος είπεν αυτώ· εγώ ειμι Γαβριήλ ο παρεστηκώς ενώπιον του Θεού\, και απεστάλην λαλήσαι πρός σε και ευαγγελίσασθαί σοι ταύτα. και ιδού έση σιωπών και μή δυνάμενος λαλήσαι άχρι ής ημέρας γένηται ταύτα\, ανθ’ ών ουκ επίστευσας τοις λόγοις μου\, οίτινες πληρωθήσονται εις τον καιρόν αυτών. και ήν ο λαός προσδοκών τον Ζαχαρίαν\, και εθαύμαζον εν τω χρονίζειν αυτόν εν τω ναώ. εξελθών δε ουκ ηδύνατο λαλήσαι αυτοίς\, και επέγνωσαν ότι οπτασίαν εώρακεν εν τω ναώ· και αυτός ήν διανεύων αυτοίς\, και διέμενε κωφός. και εγένετο ως επλήσθησαν αι ημέραι της λειτουργίας αυτού\, απήλθεν εις τον οίκον αυτού.\nΜετά δε ταύτας τάς ημέρας συνέλαβεν Ελισάβετ η γυνή αυτού\, και περιέκρυβεν εαυτήν μήνας πέντε\, λέγουσα ότι ούτω μοι πεποίηκεν ο Κύριος εν ημέραις αίς επείδεν αφελείν το όνειδός μου εν ανθρώποις. Τη δε Ελισάβετ επλήσθη ο χρόνος του τεκείν αυτήν\, και εγέννησεν υιόν. και ήκουσαν οι περίοικοι και οι συγγενείς αυτής ότι εμεγάλυνε Κύριος το έλεος αυτού μετ’ αυτής\, και συνέχαιρον αυτή. Και εγένετο εν τη ογδόη ημέρα ήλθον περιτεμείν το παιδίον\, και εκάλουν αυτό επί τω ονόματι του πατρός αυτού Ζαχαρίαν. και αποκριθείσα η μήτηρ αυτού είπεν· ουχί\, αλλά κληθήσεται Ιωάννης. και είπον πρός αυτήν ότι ουδείς εστιν εν τη συγγενεία σου ός καλείται τω ονόματι τούτω· ενένευον δε τω πατρί αυτού το τί άν θέλοι καλείσθαι αυτόν. και αιτήσας πινακίδιον έγραψε λέγων· Ιωάννης εστί το όνομα αυτού· και εθαύμασαν πάντες. ανεῴχθη δε το στόμα αυτού παραχρήμα και η γλώσσα αυτού\, και ελάλει ευλογών τον Θεόν. και εγένετο επί πάντας φόβος τους περιοικούντας αυτούς\, και εν όλη τη ορεινή της Ιουδαίας διελαλείτο πάντα τα ρήματα ταύτα\, και έθεντο πάντες οι ακούσαντες εν τη καρδία αυτών λέγοντες· τί άρα το παιδίον τούτο έσται; και χείρ Κυρίου ήν μετ’ αυτού.\nΚαι Ζαχαρίας ο πατήρ αυτού επλήσθη Πνεύματος Αγίου και προεφήτευσε λέγων· Ευλογητός Κύριος\, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ\, ότι επεσκέψατο και εποίησε λύτρωσιν τω λαώ αυτού\, Και σύ\, παιδίον\, προφήτης υψίστου κληθήση· προπορεύση γαρ πρό προσώπου Κυρίου ετοιμάσαι οδούς αυτού\, του δούναι γνώσιν σωτηρίας τω λαώ αυτού\, εν αφέσει αμαρτιών αυτών διά σπλάγχνα ελέους Θεού ημών\, εν οίς επεσκέψατο ημάς ανατολή εξ ύψους επιφάναι τοις εν σκότει και σκιά θανάτου καθημένοις\, του κατευθύναι τους πόδας ημών εις οδόν ειρήνης. Το δε παιδίον ηύξανε και εκραταιούτο πνεύματι\, και ήν εν ταις ερήμοις έως ημέρας αναδείξεως αυτού πρός τον Ισραήλ.

For God has done what the law\, weakened by the flesh\, could not do: sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin\, he condemned sin in the flesh\, in order that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us\, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh\, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
