SUMMARY:Apodosis of the Feast of the Forerunner
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 08/30/2025\nSaints and Feasts: Apodosis of the Feast of the Forerunner; Alexander\, John\, and Paul the New\, Patriarchs of Constantinople; Phantinos the Righteous of Calabria; 16 Monk-martyrs of Thebes; 6 Martyrs of Melitene; The Synaxis of the Holy Hierarchs of Serbia; The Holy New Martyrs of Serbia; Fiacre the Hermit of Meaux\nEpistle Reading: I Corinthians 1:26-31;2:1-5\nBrethren\, consider your call\, not many of you were wise according to worldly standards\, not many were powerful\, not many were of noble birth; but God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise\, God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong\, God chose what is low and despised in the world\, even things that are not\, to bring to nothing things that are\, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus\, whom God made our wisdom\, our righteousness and sanctification and redemption; therefore\, as it is written\, “Let him who boasts\, boast of the Lord.” When I came to you\, brethren\, I did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in much fear and trembling; and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom\, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power\, that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.\nGospel Reading: Matthew 20:29-34\nAt that time\, as Jesus went out of Jericho\, a great crowd followed him. And behold\, two blind men sitting by the roadside\, when they heard that Jesus was passing by\, cried out\, “Have mercy on us\, Son of David!” The crowd rebuked them\, telling them to be silent; but they cried out the more\, “Lord\, have mercy on us\, Son of David!” And Jesus stopped and called them\, saying\, “What do you want me to do for you?” They said to him\, “Lord\, let our eyes be opened.” And Jesus in pity touched their eyes\, and immediately they received their sight and followed him.

SUMMARY:Beheading of the Holy and Glorious Prophet\, Forerunner and Baptist John
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 08/29/2025\nSaints and Feasts: Beheading of the Holy and Glorious Prophet\, Forerunner and Baptist John; Theodora of Thessaloniki; Anastasios the New Martyr of Bulgaria\nStrict Fast\nMatins Gospel Reading: Matthew 14:1-13\nAt that time\, Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus; and he said to his servants\, “This is John the Baptist; he has been raised from the dead; that is why these powers are at work in him.” For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison\, for the sake of Herodias\, his brother Philip’s wife; because John said to him\, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” And though he wanted to put him to death\, he feared the people\, because they held him to be a prophet. But when Herod’s birthday came\, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod\, so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. Prompted by her mother\, she said\, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.” And the king was sorry; but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given; he sent and had John beheaded in the prison\, and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl\, and she brought it to her mother. And his disciples came and took the body and buried it; and they went and told Jesus. Now when Jesus heard this\, he withdrew from there in a boat to a lonely place apart. But when the crowds heard it\, they followed him on foot from the towns.\nEpistle Reading: Acts 13:25-33\nIN THOSE DAYS\, as John was finishing his course\, he said\, “What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No\, but after me one is coming\, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.” Brethren\, sons of the family of Abraham\, and those among you that fear God\, to us has been sent the message of this salvation. For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers\, because they did not recognize him nor understand the utterances of the prophets which are read every sabbath\, fulfilled these by condemning him. Though they could charge him with nothing deserving death\, yet they asked Pilate to have him killed. And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him\, they took him down from the tree\, and laid him in a tomb. But God raised him from the dead; and for many days he appeared to those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem\, who are now his witnesses to the people. And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers\, this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus.\nGospel Reading: Mark 6:14-30\nAt that time\, Herod the King heard about the fame of Jesus\, for his name had become known. He said\, “John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; that is why these powers are at work in him.” But others said\, “It is Elijah.” And others said\, “It is a prophet\, like one of the prophets of old.” But when Herod heard of it he said\, “John\, whom I beheaded\, has been raised.” For Herod had sent and seized John\, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias\, his brother Philip’s wife; because he had married her. For John said to Herod\, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” And Herodias had a grudge against him\, and wanted to kill him. But she could not\, for Herod feared John\, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man\, and kept him safe. When he heard him\, he was much perplexed; and yet he heard him gladly. But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and the leading men of Galilee. For when Herodias’ daughter came in and danced\, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl\, “Ask me for whatever you wish\, and I will grant it.” And he vowed to her\, “Whatever you ask me\, I will give you\, even half of my kingdom.” And she went out\, and said to her mother\, “What shall I ask?” And she said\, “The head of John the baptizer.” And she came in immediately with haste to the king\, and asked\, saying\, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” And the king was exceedingly sorry; but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her. And immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard and gave orders to bring his head. He went and beheaded him in the prison\, and brought his head on a platter\, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard of it\, they came and took his body\, and laid it in a tomb. The apostles returned to Jesus\, and told him all that they had done and taught.

SUMMARY:Moses the Black of Scete
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 08/28/2025\nSaints and Feasts: Moses the Black of Scete; Diomedes & Laurence the Martyrs; 33 Martyrs of Nicomedea; Job of Pochaev ; Synaxis of the Kiev Cave Fathers\nEpistle Reading: II Corinthians 7:1-10\nBrethren\, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit\, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God.\nOpen your hearts to us; we have wronged no one\, we have corrupted no one\, we have taken advantage of no one. I do not say this to condemn you\, for I said before that you are in our hearts\, to die together and to live together. I have great confidence in you; I have great pride in you; I am filled with comfort. With all our affliction\, I am overjoyed.\nFor even when we came into Macedonia\, our bodies had no rest but we were afflicted at every turn –fighting without and fear within. But God\, who comforts the downcast\, comforted us by the coming of Titus\, and not only by his coming but also by the comfort with which he was comforted in you\, as he told us of your longing\, your mourning\, your zeal for me\, so that I rejoiced still more. For even if I made you sorry with my letter\, I do not regret it (though I did regret it)\, for I see that that letter grieved you\, though only for a while. As it is\, I rejoice\, not because you were grieved\, but because you were grieved into repenting; for you felt a godly grief\, so that you suffered no loss through us. For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation and brings no regret\, but worldly grief produces death.\nGospel Reading: Mark 1:29-35\nAt that time\, Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew\, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever\, and immediately they told him of her. And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up\, and the fever left her; and she served them. That evening\, at sundown\, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. And the whole city was gathered together about the door. And he healed many who were sick with various diseases\, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak\, because they knew him. And in the morning\, a great while before day\, he rose and went out to a lonely place\, and there he prayed.

SUMMARY:Pimen the Great
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 08/27/2025\nSaints and Feasts: Pimen the Great; Holy Martyr Phanurius; Anthousa the Martyr; Poimen of Palestine; Hosisos the Confessor; Liverios\, Pope of Rome; Monica\nStrict Fast\nEpistle Reading: II Corinthians 6:11-16\nBrethren\, our mouth is open to you\, Corinthians; our heart is wide. You are not restricted by us\, but you are restricted in your own affections. In return — I speak as to children — widen your hearts also.\nDo not be mismated with unbelievers. For what partnership have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God\, as God said.\nGospel Reading: Mark 1:23-28\nAt that time\, there was in the synagogue of the Jews a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out\, “What have you to do with us\, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are\, the Holy One of God.” But Jesus rebuked him\, saying\, “Be silent\, and come out of him!” And the unclean spirit\, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice\, came out of him. And they were all amazed\, so that they questioned among themselves\, saying\, “What is this? A new teaching! With authority he commands even the unclean spirits\, and they obey him.” And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

SUMMARY:The Holy Martyrs Adrian and Natalie
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 08/26/2025\nSaints and Feasts: The Holy Martyrs Adrian and Natalie; Our Righteous Father Joseph; Icon of the Mother of God of Vladimir\nEpistle Reading: Hebrews 10:32-38\nBrethren\, recall the former days when\, after you were enlightened\, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings\, sometimes being publicly exposed to abuse and affliction\, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. For you had compassion on the prisoners\, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property\, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. Therefore do not throw away your confidence\, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance\, so that you may do the will of God and receive what is promised. “For yet a little while\, and the coming one shall come and shall not tarry; but my righteous one shall live by faith.”\nGospel Reading: Mark 1:16-22\nAt that time\, Jesus\, passing along by the Sea of Galilee\, saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them\, “Follow me and I will make you become fishers of men.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on a little farther\, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother\, who were in their boats mending the nets. And immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants\, and followed him. And they went into Capernaum; and immediately on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught. And they were astonished at his teaching\, for he taught them as one who had authority\, and not as the scribes.

SUMMARY:Return of the Body of Bartholomew the Glorious Apostle
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 08/25/2025\nSaints and Feasts: Return of the Body of Bartholomew the Glorious Apostle; Titus the Apostle of the 70; John the Cappadocian\, Epiphanius and Menas\, Patriarchs of Constantinople; Holy Father John of Karpathos; Ebba\, First Abbess of Coldingham\nEpistle Reading: Titus 1:1-5;2:15;3:1-2\,12-15\nPAUL\, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ\, to further the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth which accords with godliness\, in hope of eternal life which God\, who never lies\, promised ages ago and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by command of God our Savior;\nTo Titus\, my true child in a common faith:\nGrace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.\nDeclare these things; exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you.\nRemind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities\, to be obedient\, to be ready for any honest work\, to speak evil of no one\, to avoid quarreling\, to be gentle\, and to show perfect courtesy toward all men.\nWhen I send Artemas or Tychicos to you\, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis\, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds\, so as to help cases of urgent need\, and not to be unfruitful.\nAll who are with me send greetings to you. Greet those who love us in the faith.\nGrace be with you all. Amen.\nGospel Reading: Matthew 5:14-19\nThe Lord said to his disciples\, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel\, but on a stand\, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men\, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly\, I say to you\, till heaven and earth pass away\, not an iota\, not a dot\, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so\, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”

SUMMARY:11th Sunday of Matthew
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 08/24/2025\nSaints and Feasts: 11th Sunday of Matthew; Eutyches the Hieromartyr & Disciple of St. John the Theologian; Cosmas of Aetolia\, Equal to the Apostles; The Translation of the Relics of Dionysios of Zakynthos\, Bishop of Aegina; The Translation of the Holy Relics of Saint Peter\, Metropolitan of Moscow\nMatins Gospel Reading: John 21:14-25\nAt that time\, Jesus revealed himself to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. And he said to Simon Peter\, “Simon\, son of John\, do you love me more than these?” He said to him\, “Yes\, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him\, “Feed my lambs.” A second time he said to him\, “Simon\, son of John\, do you love me?” He said to him\, “Yes\, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him\, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time\, “Simon\, son of John\, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time\, “Do you love me?” And he said to him\, “Lord\, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him\, “Feed my sheep. Truly\, truly\, I say to you\, when you were young\, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old\, you will stretch out your hands\, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go.” (This he said to show by what death he was to glorify God.) And after this he said to him\, “Follow me.” Peter turned and saw following them the disciple whom Jesus loved\, who had lain close to his breast at the supper and had said\, “Lord\, who is it that is going to betray you?” When Peter saw him\, he said to Jesus\, “Lord\, what about this man?” Jesus said to him\, “If it is my will that he remain until I come\, what is that to you? Follow me!” The saying spread abroad among the brethren that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die\, but\, “If it is my will that he remain until I come\, what is that to you?” This is the disciple who is bearing witness to these things\, and who has written these things; and we know that his testimony is true. But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written\, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.\nEpistle Reading: I Corinthians 9:2-12\nBrethren\, you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. This is my defense to those who would examine me. Do we not have the right to our food and drink? Do we not have the right to be accompanied by a wife\, as the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living? Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Who tends a flock without getting some of the milk? Do I say this on human authority? Does not the law say the same? For it is written in the law of Moses\, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain.” Is it for oxen that God is concerned? Does he not speak entirely for our sake? It was written for our sake\, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of a share in the crop. If we have sown spiritual good among you\, is it too much if we reap your material benefits? If others share this rightful claim upon you\, do not we still more? Nevertheless\, we have not made use of this right\, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ.\nGospel Reading: Matthew 18:23-35\nThe Lord said this parable: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the reckoning\, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents; and as he could not pay\, his lord ordered him to be sold\, with his wife and children and all that he had\, and payment to be made. So the servant fell on his knees\, imploring him\, ‘Lord\, have patience with me\, and I will pay you everything.’ And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. But that same servant\, as he went out\, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said\, ‘Pay what you owe.’ So his fellow servant fell down and besought him\, ‘Have patience with me\, and I will pay you.’ He refused and went and put him in prison till he should pay the debt. When his fellow servants saw what had taken place\, they were greatly distressed\, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. Then his lord summoned him and said to him\, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you besought me; and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant\, as I had mercy on you?’ And in anger his lord delivered him to the torturers\, till he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you\, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”

SUMMARY:Apodosis of the Dormition of our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 08/23/2025\nSaints and Feasts: Apodosis of the Dormition of our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary; Our Holy Father Irenaeus\, Bishop of Lyons; Lupus the Martyr; Our Righteous Father Nicholas of Sikelion; Our Holy Father Kallinikos\, Patriarch of Constantinople; Haralambos of Kalyviani; 38 Martyrs of Thrace; Our Holy Father Irenaeus\, Bishop of Sirmium\nEpistle Reading: Philippians 2:5-11\nBrethren\, have this mind among yourselves\, which is yours in Christ Jesus\, who\, though he was in the form of God\, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped\, but emptied himself\, taking the form of a servant\, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death\, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name\, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow\, in heaven and on earth and under the earth\, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord\, to the glory of God the Father.\nGospel Reading: Luke 10:38-42\, 11:27-28\nAt that time\, Jesus entered a village; and a woman called Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary\, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving; and she went to him and said\, “Lord\, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve you alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her\, “Martha\, Martha\, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion\, which shall not be taken away from her.” As he said this\, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him\, “Blessed is the womb that bore you\, and the breasts that you sucked!” But he said\, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

SUMMARY:The Holy Martyr Agathonicus
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 08/22/2025\nSaints and Feasts: The Holy Martyr Agathonicus; Holy Martyr Anthuse; Athanasios the Hieromartyr & Bishop of Tarsus; New Martyrs Manuel and John; The Synaxis of the Icon of the Mother of God of Prusa; Afterfeast of the Dormition of our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary\nStrict Fast\nEpistle Reading: II Corinthians 4:13-18\nBrethren\, since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote\, “I believed\, and so I spoke\,” we too believe\, and so we speak\, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. For it is all for your sake\, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving\, to the glory of God.\nSo we do not lose heart. Though our outer nature is wasting away\, our inner nature is being renewed every day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison\, because we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen; for the things that are seen are transient\, but the things that are unseen are eternal.\nGospel Reading: Matthew 24:27-33\, 42-51\nThe Lord said to his disciples\, “As the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west\, so will be the coming of the Son of man. Wherever the body is\, there the eagles will be gathered together.\n“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened\, and the moon will not give its light\, and the stars will fall from heaven\, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken; then will appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven\, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn\, and they will see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory; and he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call\, and they will gather his elect from the four winds\, from one end of heaven to the other.\n“From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves\, you know that summer is near. So also\, when you see all these things\, you know that he is near\, at the very gates.\n“Watch therefore\, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But know this\, that if the householder had known in what part of the night the thief was coming\, he would have watched and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready; for the Son of man is coming at an hour you do not expect.\n“Who then is the faithful and wise servant\, whom his master has set over his household\, to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master when he comes will find so doing. Truly\, I say to you\, he will set him over all his possessions. But if that wicked servant says to himself\, ‘My master is delayed\,’ and begins to beat his fellow servants\, and eats and drinks with the drunken\, the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know\, and will punish him\, and put him with the hypocrites; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.”

SUMMARY:The Holy Apostle Thaddaeus
DESCRIPTION:Saints\, Feasts\, and Readings for 08/21/2025\nSaints and Feasts: The Holy Apostle Thaddaeus; The Holy Martyr Bassa and Her Sons: Theognis\, Agapius\, and Pistus; Athanasios Patelaros\, Patriarch of Constantinople; Afterfeast of the Dormition of our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary\nEpistle Reading: II Corinthians 4:1-12\nBrethren\, having this ministry as we have received mercy\, we do not lose heart. We have renounced disgraceful\, underhanded ways; we refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word\, but by the open statement of truth we would commend ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled\, it is veiled only to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers\, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ\, who is the likeness of God. For what we preach is not ourselves\, but Jesus Christ as Lord\, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who said\, “Let light shine out of darkness\,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.\nBut we have this treasure in earthen vessels\, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way\, but not crushed; perplexed\, but not driven to despair; persecuted\, but not forsaken; struck down\, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus\, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus’ sake\, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us\, but life in you.\nGospel Reading: Mark 3:13-21\nAt that time\, Jesus went up on the mountain\, and called to him those whom he desired; and they came to him. And he appointed twelve\, to be with him\, and to be sent out to preach and have authority to cast out demons: Simon whom he surnamed Peter; James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James\, whom he surnamed Boanerges\, that is\, sons of thunder; Andrew and Philip and Bartholomew\, and Matthew\, and Thomas\, and James the son of Alphaios\, and Thaddaios\, and Simon the Cananaean\, and Judas Iscariot\, who betrayed him. Then he went home; and the crowd came together again\, so that they could not even eat. And when his family heard it\, they went out to seize him\, for people were saying\, “He is beside himself.”
