But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh\, the son of the free woman through promise. Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai\, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem\, for she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem above is free\, and she is our mother. Αλλʼ ο μέν εκ της παιδίσκης κατά σάρκα γεγέννηται\, ο δε εκ της ελευθέρας διά της επαγγελίας. Άτινά εστιν αλληγορούμενα· αύται γαρ εισιν δύο διαθήκαι· μία μέν από όρους Σινά\, εις δουλείαν γεννώσα\, ήτις εστίν Άγαρ. Η δε άνω Ιερουσαλήμ ελευθέρα εστίν\, ήτις εστίν μήτηρ πάντων ημών· γέγραπται γάρ\, Ευφράνθητι\, στείρα\, η ου τίκτουσα· ρήξον και βόησον\, η ουκ ωδίνουσα· ότι πολλά τα τέκνα της ερήμου μάλλον ή της εχούσης τον άνδρα.\nΑνάγνωσις Ευαγγελίου: Κατά Λουκάν 8:16-21\nΕίπεν ο Κύριος· Ουδείς δε λύχνον άψας καλύπτει αυτόν σκεύει ή υποκάτω κλίνης τίθησιν\, αλλ᾿ επί λυχνίας επιτίθησιν\, ίνα οι εισπορευόμενοι βλέπωσι το φώς. ου γάρ εστι κρυπτόν ό ου φανερόν γενήσεται\, ουδέ απόκρυφον ό ου γνωσθήσεται και εις φανερόν έλθη. βλέπετε ούν πώς ακούετε· ός γαρ εάν έχη\, δοθήσεται αυτώ\, και ός εάν μή έχη\, και ό δοκεί έχειν αρθήσεται απ᾿ αυτού. Παρεγένοντο δε πρός αυτόν η μήτηρ και οι αδελφοί αυτού\, και ουκ ηδύναντο συντυχείν αυτώ διά τον όχλον. και απηγγέλη αυτώ λεγόντων· η μήτηρ σου και οι αδελφοί σου εστήκασιν έξω ιδείν σε θέλοντες. ο δε αποκριθείς είπε πρός αυτούς· μήτηρ μου και αδελφοί μου ούτοί εισιν οι τον λόγον του Θεού ακούοντες και ποιούντες αυτόν.
