For you bring some strange things to our ears; we wish to know therefore what these things mean.” Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new. So Paul\, standing in the middle of the Areopagos\, said: “Men of Athens\, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along\, and observed the objects of your worship\, I found also an altar with this inscription\, ‘To an unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown\, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it\, being Lord of heaven and earth\, does not live in shrines made by man\, nor is he served by human hands\, as though he needed anything\, since he himself gives to all men life and breath and everything. And he made from one every nation of men to live on all the face of the earth\, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their habitation\, that they should seek God\, in the hope that they might feel after him and find him. Yet he is not far from each one of us\, for ‘In him we live and move and have our being.’\nGospel Reading: John 12:19-36\nAt that time\, the Pharisees took counsel against Jesus and said to one another\, “You see that you can do nothing; look\, the world has gone after him.”\nNow among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. So these came to Philip\, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee\, and said to him\, “Sir\, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew went with Philip and they told Jesus. And Jesus answered them\, “The hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified. Truly\, truly\, I say to you\, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies\, it remains alone; but if it dies\, it bears much fruit. He who loves his life loses it\, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If any one serves me\, he must follow me; and where I am\, there shall my servant be also; if any one serves me\, the Father will honor him.\n“Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father\, save me from this hour?’ No\, for this purpose I have come to this hour. Father\, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven\, “I have glorified it\, and I will glorify it again.” The crowd standing by heard it and said that it had thundered. Others said\, “An angel has spoken to him.” Jesus answered\, “This voice has come for your sake\, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world\, now shall the ruler of this world be cast out; and I\, when I am lifted up from the earth\, will draw all men to myself.” He said this to show by what death he was to die. The crowd answered him\, “We have heard from the law that the Christ remains for ever. How can you say that the Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?” Jesus said to them\, “The light is with you for a little longer. Walk while you have the light\, lest the darkness overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes. While you have the light\, believe in the light\, that you may become sons of light.”

Σταθείς δε ο Παύλος εν μέσω του Αρείου πάγου έφη\, Άνδρες Αθηναίοι\, κατά πάντα ως δεισιδαιμονεστέρους υμάς θεωρώ. Εν αυτώ γαρ ζώμεν και κινούμεθα και εσμεν· ως και τινες των καθʼ υμάς ποιητών ειρήκασιν\, Του γαρ και γένος εσμέν.\nΑνάγνωσις Ευαγγελίου: Κατά Ιωάννην 12:19-36\nΤω καιρώ εκείνω\, οι ούν Φαρισαίοι είπον πρός εαυτούς· θεωρείτε ότι ουκ ωφελείτε ουδέν; ίδε ο κόσμος οπίσω αυτού απήλθεν. ῏Ησαν δέ τινες ῞Ελληνες εκ των αναβαινόντων ίνα προσκυνήσωσιν εν τη εορτή. ούτοι ούν προσήλθον Φιλίππω τω από Βηθσαϊδά της Γαλιλαίας\, και ηρώτων αυτόν λέγοντες· κύριε\, θέλομεν τον ᾿Ιησούν ιδείν. έρχεται Φίλιππος και λέγει τω ᾿Ανδρέα\, και πάλιν ᾿Ανδρέας και Φίλιππος λέγουσι τω ᾿Ιησού· ο δε ᾿Ιησούς απεκρίνατο αυτοίς λέγων· ελήλυθεν η ώρα ίνα δοξασθή ο υιός του ανθρώπου. αμήν αμήν λέγω υμίν\, εάν μή ο κόκκος του σίτου πεσών εις την γήν αποθάνη\, αυτός μόνος μένει· εάν δε αποθάνη\, πολύν καρπόν φέρει. ο φιλών την ψυχήν αυτού απολέσει αυτήν\, και ο μισών την ψυχήν αυτού εν τω κόσμω τούτω\, εις ζωήν αιώνιον φυλάξει αυτήν. εάν εμοί διακονή τις\, εμοί ακολουθείτω\, και όπου ειμί εγώ\, εκεί και ο διάκονος ο εμός έσται· και εάν τις εμοί διακονή\, τιμήσει αυτόν ο πατήρ.\nΝύν η ψυχή μου τετάρακται\, και τί είπω; πάτερ\, σώσον με εκ της ώρας ταύτης. αλλά διά τούτο ήλθον εις την ώραν ταύτην. πάτερ\, δόξασόν σου το όνομα. ήλθεν ούν φωνή εκ του ουρανού· και εδόξασα και πάλιν δοξάσω. ο ούν όχλος ο εστώς και ακούσας έλεγε βροντήν γεγονέναι· άλλοι έλεγον· άγγελος αυτώ λελάληκεν. απεκρίθη ο ᾿Ιησούς και είπεν· ου δι᾽ εμέ αύτη η φωνή γέγονεν\, αλλά δι᾽ υμάς. νύν κρίσις εστί του κόσμου τούτου\, νύν ο άρχων του κόσμου τούτου εκβληθήσεται έξω· καγώ εάν υψωθώ εκ της γής\, πάντας ελκύσω πρός εμαυτόν. τούτο δε έλεγε σημαίνων ποίω θανάτω ήμελλεν αποθνήσκειν. απεκρίθη αυτώ ο όχλος· ημείς ηκούσαμεν εκ του νόμου ότι ο Χριστός μένει εις τον αιώνα\, και πώς σύ λέγεις\, δεί υψωθήναι τον υιόν του ανθρώπου; τίς εστιν ούτος ο υιός του ανθρώπου; είπεν ούν αυτοίς ο ᾿Ιησούς· έτι μικρόν χρόνον το φώς μεθ᾽ υμών εστι· περιπατείτε έως το φώς έχετε\, ίνα μή σκοτία υμάς καταλάβη· και ο περιπατών εν τη σκοτία ουκ οίδε πού υπάγει. έως το φώς έχετε\, πιστεύετε εις το φώς\, ίνα υιοί φωτός γένησθε.
