He killed James the brother of John with the sword; and when he saw that it pleased the Jews\, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread. And when he had seized him\, he put him in prison\, and delivered him to four squads of soldiers to guard him\, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. So Peter was kept in prison; but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the Church.\nThe very night when Herod was about to bring him out\, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers\, bound with two chains\, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison; and behold\, an angel of the Lord appeared\, and a light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter on the side and woke him\, saying\, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his hands. Απεκρίθησαν αυτώ· Σπέρμα Αβραάμ εσμεν και ουδενί δεδουλεύκαμεν πώποτε· πώς σύ λέγεις ότι ελεύθεροι γενήσεσθε; Απεκρίθη αυτοίς ο Ιησούς· Αμήν αμήν λέγω υμίν ότι πάς ο ποιών την αμαρτίαν δούλός εστι της αμαρτίας. Ο δε δούλος ου μένει εν τη οικία εις τον αιώνα· ο υιός μένει εις τον αιώνα. Εάν ούν ο υιός υμάς ελευθερώση\, όντως ελεύθεροι έσεσθε. Οίδα ότι σπέρμα Αβραάμ εστε· αλλά ζητείτέ με αποκτείναι\, ότι ο λόγος ο εμός ου χωρεί εν υμίν. Εγώ ό εώρακα παρά τω πατρί μου λαλώ· και υμείς ούν ό εωράκατε παρά τω πατρί υμών ποιείτε. Απεκρίθησαν και είπον αυτώ· Ο πατήρ ημών Αβραάμ εστι. Λέγει αυτοίς ο ᾿Ιησούς· Ει τέκνα του Αβραάμ ήτε\, τα έργα του Αβραάμ εποιείτε. νύν δε ζητείτέ με αποκτείναι\, άνθρωπον ός την αλήθειαν υμίν λελάληκα\, ήν ήκουσα παρά του Θεού· τούτο Αβραάμ ουκ εποίησεν. υμείς ποιείτε τα έργα του πατρός υμών. Είπον ούν αυτώ· Ημείς εκ πορνείας ου γεγεννήμεθα· ένα πατέρα έχομεν\, τον Θεόν. Είπεν ούν αυτοίς ο Ιησούς· Ει ο Θεός πατήρ υμών ήν\, ηγαπάτε άν εμέ· εγώ γαρ εκ του Θεού εξήλθον και ήκω· ουδέ γαρ απ᾽ εμαυτού ελήλυθα\, αλλ᾽ εκείνός με απέστειλε.
